A Journey's BeginningAnother day began on the southern plains of Xian. The sun had risen over the far horizon a few hours ago, burning off the fog that had rolled across the wide plain. From the clouds emerged a city that, to the unknowing observer, would appear to be ascending into the sky. But this was nothing more than illusion as the fog melted away to reveal the city of Yungang as being on a hill, with one taller building dominating the landscape. Shimizu Toshiro looked out the window of the shuttle. The dark, dirty clouds and the rain they had brought parted off in the distance, letting rays of light poke through. The pine-covered hills in the distance glowed brighter, catching Toshiro’s attention. The sun hadn’t been out in the past three days, an effect of the spring weather patterns that brought storms to the Pacific Northwest. But it wasn’t the glow of the sunlight that had caught his attention. Rather it was the glow of explosions off on the hillside that captured his thoughts.
